My initial photographs were shot in black and white film and developed in the darkroom. When I was introduced to Photoshop the possibilities became endless. In some of the digital compositions I create, I combine my own images with vintage photographs. In others I draw or paint images by hand and after scanning them I combine them with photographs and compose them in Photoshop.
I am fascinated with images of people from another time period. Placing these individuals from the past in contemporary scenarios, greatly inspires me, as does the use of light and shadow employed by the old masters. By incorporating vintage photographs into contemporary backgrounds, these pieces explore the theme of transcendence and question whether our perception of past, present and future is as concrete as it appears to be.
Through the juxtaposition of the old and the new, I am bringing these individuals into the present, and ‘giving them life’ in a contemporary setting. By altering their image and integrating them into a different context I allow them to exist in other realities.
